| New approches of punarjani |
Alcoholism, also known as Alcoholic Dependence Syndrome is a chronic family disease. Alcoholism is characterized by symptoms of an impaired control over alcohol, compulsive thoughts about alcohol and distorted thinking. Compare with other disaster or other disease more people are dying with Alcoholism. According to the new report the use of alcohol in worldwide has been in a steady increase. The culture of drinking is so deep rooted in Kerala, and it is noted that the highest per-capita consumption of alcohol in India is highest in Kerala .So that the project of “Punarjani” is so relevant in this time. |

| Punarjani and its services |
“Punarjani” is an NGO which was formed by a group of Ex-Alcoholics and some other good Samaritans under the leadership of Dr Johns.K.Mangalam , who was a victim of Alcoholism. “Punarjani” means the Re-Birth.Really it is a rebirth not only for its founderer and Managing Trustee Dr.Johns K Mangalam, but also for more than 2000 alcoholic addicts and for their whole family members, till now.
We emphasize the fact that ‘Alcoholism is a disease’, ‘Alcoholism is a family disease’ and there is no medicine to cure it, which not only affects the mind, body and soul of an Alcoholic, but also affects the whole family. Thus, we begin by motivating the patient through proper counseling and provide basic education for the family members regarding their state of mind, its reasons, remedy and all other aspects who had also become mentally ill due to the impact of the life of an Alcoholic in their home depend .In fact, these are the scapegoats of Alcoholism.
| Punarjani has it's own way of treating |
One of the specialties of “Punarjani” among other de-addiction centers is its approach. Both group and individual psychotherapy have been used. The patient should be educated about the risks of continuing alcohol use. They are utilizing the depth of psychotherapy. The effectiveness of the application of this approach is the success of this organization; these new ways are definitely a novel model for other de-addiction centers. |
Counseling is an important method of treatment used in “Punarjani”. Unlike other counselors Dr.Johns K Mangalam, with his humorously colloquial language is creating a new style of counseling which may be a unique model. Dr.Johns with his own experience as an Alcoholic could read the mind of other Alcoholic. His style and colloquial language definitely touches the heart of other Alcoholic. The counseling sessions are the main reasons for the conversion of the minds of Alcoholics. |
Sharing as a method of treatment technique is used in “Punarjani”. By sharing, the patient can ventilate their depressed feelings and emotions .The feelings of helplessness, worthlessness, rejection, marginalization etc will be reduced and even can eliminate from the minds of patients through these. By the same process of open and voluntary sharing of thoughts , experience and hopes among the inmates of “Punarjani” we impart hopes and expectations , energy, confidence and will to overcome the obstacle and to fight against the disease of Alcoholism. |
| |
| Speciality of Punarjani among other de-addiction centers |
Alcoholics usually resist undergoing any sort of treatment due to two reasons, the formally accepted method of treatment which restrict the total freedom of an Alcoholic by imprisoning him in a De-Addiction center for a long period of time and the application heavy doses of medicine are not acceptable to them .The salient features and factors, which differentiate the approach of Punarjani is total freedom of the patient and the non use of any sort of medicine for the recovery the patient from his disease. |
Freedom from unnecessary bondages is very important for an Alcoholic. An Alcoholic is a person who lavishly enjoyed and misused freedom by virtue of his disease or as a symptom of his disease. So Punarjani believes that whenever he is compelled to restrict his freedom, he will not co-operate with the means and method or attempts of recovery from Alcoholism .Restriction of his freedom by imprisonment will generate a rebellious attitude in the mind of Alcoholics and thus their mind will not listen to what he may hear about his disease and its method and means of recovery.
An intellectual conviction about the true nature of this disease, its symptoms, reason, remedy, means and method of recovery of an Alcoholic is very essential for the recovery. Unfortunately, while the patient is under the state of imprisonment, he is not able to and will no co-operate with those who wish to assist him for his recovery. Thus “Punarjani” has no gates for its de-addiction center
All we have here is a communal living together, which enable the patients to learn from the life experience, losses, hopes, achievements and expectations of other Alcoholics, which give a proper insight about the bad effects of Alcoholism. Among the Alcoholics there will not be any sort of difference between them due to religion, wealth, education. They will interact with the whole family members of other patients. That a new friendship and relationship will begin at ‘Punarjani’ |
Systematic desensitization is based on the principle of reciprocal inhibition described by Wolpe. Recently, a new approach to Alcoholism has introduced by Kraft (1968) in which the patient is treated for his underlying social difficulties without special attention. The advantage of this method of treatment, once the patient has become socially competent without the assistance of alcohol, is that he can stop drinking without developing a desire to drink to excess. Through desensitization, Dr. Johns is creating a sort of determination in the minds of inmates, he is making this patient to serve alcohol for the newcomer and thus he can overcome the temptation even before he is discharged from “Punarjani” |
Live show is a psychological technique to understand themselves by the Alcoholics. It is an effective method used here to show the bad impact of Alcohol up on the a patient after giving more Alcohol to new patients the other patients undergoing recovery process will get the chance to observe the absurdities performed by the new patient. That will be a shocking experience to them. The suffering of their family members also will be recognized. The pathetic condition of addiction could be realized by the addict by this method. |
| Typical language for communication |
There is a typical language for communication between Alcoholic for communication. The language of sophisticated counselors is mostly alien and not acceptable to Alcoholics. Therefore, a lesson or message expressed by an Alcoholic in his own language could reach at the understanding faculty of other Alcoholic better than that of an academically educated, trained counselor |

At “Punarjani” everybody is free to choose his own Deity as he himself conceives it. Because “Punarjani” believes that in order to fight and defeat the disease Alcoholism .We need the help of a power that will be stronger than alcohol, which has already defeated us. The belief and prayers offered by an Alcoholic and his suffering family will reap its fruits, through his recovery and future prosperity, through the unexpected interventions of God. It is a fact only but what we experience as a fact for which we may not have adequate and reasonable explanations. |
| Follow up through net work |
The net work of the family members of Alcoholics, who happened to get a chance to stay at “Punarjani” for a period of 21 days, will act as the supporting group for every newly recovered Alcoholic. The intimacy and affection expressed among the similarly aggrieved and suffering patient will have strength stronger than that of any other group. Thus in fact each and every person who under goes this recovery process at “Punarjani” will become a healer of other Alcoholics. Thus we can feel the wonder created by the intervention of “wounded healer” upon the patients at “Punarjani”. |
To eradicate the miseries suffered by innocent persons due to the adverse effects of alcohol is the common intention of the first trustees of this Trust because we uphold the dictum that |
| |
“Alcoholism is a social evil and disease but it can be cured .” |
| |
Even prior to the formation and registration of this Trust in the name “Punarjani”, the first trustees were persons involved in the tragedy of the disease of alcoholism, either as a victim or by way of a saviour and sympathetic rescuer of an Alcoholic. Thus, we all are aware of the calamities suffered by the diseased persons and the grievances suffered by the blood relatives and concerned persons of such Alcoholics. Therefore, we intent to provide help and assistance to those persons who are suffered by Alcoholism and other drug abuses. We wish to help them by providing sufficient means to recover from the total ruin by Alcoholism. |
| |
Prior to and subsequent to the inception of this Trust, ‘Punarjani’, we propagate and attempted to educate our local people about the dangerous effects of alcohol abuse and also make them aware that Alcoholism is not only a bad habit but it is a dangerous disease, from which a person can recover, live and enjoy the fruits of life along with their family members in a joyous self-reliant manner without alcohol. |
The nine days camp at Thadaparambu Harijan Colony was an encouraging event in this attempt. From Atham to Onam (10 special enthusiastic days prior to the traditional and secularly celebrating festival of Kerala, Onam), we conducted educating and propagating classes at the said colony which is inhabited by daily wage workers, who are mostly consumers of alcohol as a medicine for their daily hard labour. We are not competent to claim that the said classes and propaganda against abuse of alcohol at that place created a mass awareness. We can assure that at least some of the younger generation who attended the classes regularly will withdraw from alcohol abuse. But the reliable news that, on a subsequent day they all unanimously decided and avoided the use of alcohol at the ceremony of a marriage conducted in the colony, really made us happy and provide fresh energy and confidence in the services (already) rendered and intended to be completed through our Trust. |
On the occasion of the official inauguration of the Trust at Poomala High School, our Trust conducted a Seminar about alcoholism in which Dr. Sebastian who was brought up at Poomala in his childhood and later on became a famous surgeon who obtained degrees from foreign countries and at present, the Head of Fathima Hospital, Kalpatta and Dr. Anandan K R, Associate Professor of Medical College, Thrissur and other eminent persons including active members of ‘Alcoholics anonymous’ also, educated and shared their experience with more than 150 persons who attended the Seminar. The said seminar provided an opportunity to become aware of the importance of prevention of Alcohol and other drug abuses and the methods, means and centers which help them in order to recover from Alcoholism. |
On October 23rd our Trust conducted one-day camp mainly for women, who are badly affected by alcoholic addicted persons. In the said camp more than 150 women participated and learned about the mode of behaviour to be followed in dealing with persons (father, husband, brother or son) who are prone to the consumption of alcohol and other drugs. They became really enlightened about the reasons, preventives, the need and means for eradicating alcohol and other drugs from their lives and from the whole family. They became liberal of their role in helping an alcoholic from his disease. The said camp was conducted with the help of women members of the world-wide organization of “Al-anon”, who shared their experiences. |
Parallel to this educating missions and propagations against Alcoholism, we felt the need of a Retreat Center in which a person totally ill due alcoholism, can be admitted for withdrawal and detoxification treatment for de-addiction. Such a Retreat Center- a peaceful, calm resting place which provide medical, emotional, motivational, and spiritual help and assistance to a badly-affected dependant alcoholic - is very essential in the treatment of mentally depressed, emotionally disturbed and spiritually fallen alcoholics. Our attempts to re-discover, enlighten and de-addict a person who is suffered by the dangerous disease of alcoholism is totally based upon the principles and ideals of humanism and philanthropy which is secular in nature. Even though we believe in God the Almighty, any discrimination of caste or creed should not be a hindrance to the recovery of any human being affected by alcoholism, hence we wish to provide absolute freedom to the Alcoholics to conceive, pray and believe in God as he wish to conceive. |
The said Retreat Center can be functioned as a coordinating place for the various services intended to be implemented by our Trust. Thus, that can also manage, provide all sorts of assistance in the rehabilitation of de-addicted alcoholics and to their dependents who are suffered by the after-effects of Alcoholism. The said Center also will be the focal point through which we implement our programs of education and propagation against alcohol abuse and will be the Counseling Center for different categories of persons who are badly in need of it. |
We located an ideal site for the establishment of such a Retreat Center at Poomala, which is a rural village, situated at a height more than about 1000 meters above the sea level and is only 15 Km away from Thrissur town. The said site having an extent of one acre is situated very adjacent to the reservoir of Poomala Dam. A very beautiful, calm and quite place with easy access to highway at which, electricity, communication and water facilities are easily available. |
Thus, our Trust intend to purchase the said plot for an amount of Rs. 5 lakhs and in it we wish to plant and grow herbal medicinal plants and also to generate a ‘Star-Forest’ by growing respective plants of each birth-stars, which provide a peaceful meditative and totally unpolluted fresh air to the inhabitants of the Retreat & Rehabilitation Center. |
Moreover, we wish to construct a building complex having about 3500 Sq. feet area, in an eco-friendly manner of Architecture, by using locally available rock, granite, clay-bricks, bamboo and wood. Thus the Center would be hygienic and will be cheaper in cost. |
The other requirements of a compound wall, tube-wells, electricity, telephone, water connections, furniture for treatment and counseling and related requirements also should be implemented in the said Retreat and, De-addiction treatment Center – “Punarjani”. |
We already launched our website “www.punarjani.org” through which we intend to help alcoholics in their attempts to recover from alcoholism and also to educate and propagate against the abuse of alcohol and other drugs and also to spread out ideals and objectives to the world, by enlarging its space, in due course. |
In this respect, we already created a Compact Disc by the name, “Punarjani” (re-birth) which is an illustration of the adverse impact suffered by human beings due to alcohol and other drug abuse with touching stories & experiences of the victims of alcohol. The said CD also included the discussions with eminent doctors and social workers, which are interested and involved in the service of de-addiction treatment and solving psychological problems of adversely affected persons. |
The present members of the
Trust alone are not competent enough to provide adequate funds for
implementing our dream project. So, in order to raise the minimum required
funds for the implementation of infrastructure for this project, we wish to
incorporate persons/institutions/organizations as members of this Trust by
accepting at least an amount of Rs. 10,000. The eligibility of obtaining
admission in the Trust “Punarjani” as a member is, concern for
persons who become an Alcoholic without his intention, and the aggrieved
members of his family. |
“Punarjani” is a charitable organization, which is intended to function without the motive of profit in its all spheres of services. |
We hope that, if our project of constructing the infrastructure of the Retreat, Rehabilitation Center could be implemented with the help of its members and well-wishers, then many agencies like; State, Central Government, other Charitable Institution and NGO’s may help us to run, maintain, develop and spread out and fulfill our objectives of total recovery of at least many human beings their family from alcohol and other drugs and the inevitable total destruction by them. |
We are well aware of the magnitude of our task. But, we know that Alcohol is mightier than Human Will Power, at least in the case of an alcoholic. In order to fight against this evil, we are all in need of the help of unseen power of Almighty, whether we call it Allah, God, Iswara Brahma, Purusha, Prakriti (Nature), Jesus, Krishna, or Rama or by any name. We firmly believe that it is only through the grace and intervention of the Supreme Power, we can get-rid off this calamity of alcoholism and other drug abuse and firmly expect His graceful intervention in our project through you. In this venture we wish to provide special significance to Alcoholics Anonymous, Al - Anon and Al - Atteen |
A meager amount which you spent for luxuries and a little span of time used for entertainment will be worthful help, and turning point for our Trust and it activities. |
We maintain our Trust account no: 1505 in the name “Punarjani” with Catholic Syrian Bank, West fort Brach, Poothole. P.O , Thrissur- 680 004, |
So, with prayers, we are submitting this request for moral and spiritual support, financial assistance, co-operation advice, guidance and involvement in all manners from you and your organization in actualizing our project to construct and function a de-addiction treatment & rehabilitation centre under the banner of Punarjani and other programs for de-addiction. |

The workers, volunteers, including Dr Johns is doing their work as a divine service. They treat each every patient as a true brother who is in need of, help, assistance and help; they provide all these not for profit but due to the divine dedication. Thu this organization becomes their icon organization, as they visits and have a relation with each and every voluntary worker of “Punarjani”. And all of them become the members of a very large family, like Vasudaivakudumbam or Punarjani’s own children. |
The psychological techniques invented through experiments by Dr Johns, are effectively proved by this institution “Punarjani”,during this period o 5 years .But it is be evaluated and assessed by academic scholars and other eligible institutions, if it could be applied in various De-Addiction centers. We expect that this hope also will be actualized at the earliest.
We the management of “Punarjani” invite and visits our center and to promote the slogan “Alcoholism is a family disease and it can be cured through proper methods” |
